Estimating Quantities

To assist in estimating quantities, a few useful rules of thumb follow:

1. Approximately 40 square inches of plain plaited weaving weighs about 1 ounce. After you estimate the total finished surface area (in sq.inches) of your project piece, divide that area by 40 with the result being the estimated ounces required.

2. Loose prepared strips weigh approximately 1 ounce per 70 square inches of strip area. This in part depends on how thick the finished prepared strips are, which will vary due to the handcrafted process used in preparing the strips.

3. Consider adding an additional 5% or more for wastage and the overlapping of strips required when multiple strips are joined.

4. If you plan on double plaiting, or using other heavier weaving patterns, adjust the required quantity of strips accordingly.
